GLOBAL FOOD FACTS – PRIVACY POLICY

Global Food Facts (“the App”, “we”, “our”) is designed with privacy first.
We believe users should understand how their information is handled, and we aim to collect as little data as possible.
This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how it is used, and the choices you have.

The App does not require an account and does not collect personal information unless you choose to submit optional content.

1. INFORMATION WE DO NOT COLLECT

We do NOT collect or request the following data at any time:

  • Name

  • Email address

  • Phone number

  • Health information

  • Location or GPS

  • Contacts or address book

  • Photos, videos, or files from your device

  • Device identifiers (IMEI, Android ID, advertising ID)

  • Biometric information

  • Payment information

We do not share, sell, or rent any personal data.
The App is fully usable offline and without login.

2. INFORMATION WE MAY PROCESS

We only process the minimum data required for the App to function.

2.1. Camera Access (Optional)

Purpose: Barcode scanning only

  • Used solely to read barcodes and extract codes

  • We do not store images, videos, frames, or camera data

  • No data from camera use is uploaded or shared

  • You may use manual code entry if you prefer not to grant permission

Google Play-compliant explanation is shown before asking for permission.

2.2. Search Queries

When you search for foods:

  • Some searches may be processed offline (local database)

  • For online database lookups, only the search keyword is sent to our server

  • We do not attach any identifiers, device ID, or personal information

Search terms are never used for profiling.

2.3. Device & App Performance Data (Optional Analytics)

Analytics and crash reports are OFF by default.

If enabled, we may collect:

  • General device type (e.g., “Android 12”, “tablet/phone”)

  • Basic app usage metrics (screen views, feature use)

  • Crash information (non-personal)

This data:

  • Cannot identify you

  • Is used only to fix bugs and improve stability

  • Can be disabled at any time in Settings

2.4. Local Preferences

Stored only on your device:

  • Allergen and diet filters

  • Recently viewed items

  • Offline data
    This information never leaves your device.

3. COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS (Optional)

The App allows users to suggest corrections, add missing data, and upload product images.

If you choose to submit content:

  • Text and optional images may be uploaded to our secure server

  • Content is reviewed manually before being published

  • We do not require identification or accounts

  • Images should only contain product packaging — no people or personal items

We may reject or delete submissions that include:

  • Faces or identifiable people

  • Sensitive personal data

  • Copyrighted or harmful content

You may request deletion of your submission at any time.

4. HOW WE USE INFORMATION

We use collected or submitted information only to:

  • Provide ingredient, nutrition, and product facts

  • Improve accuracy and coverage of food data

  • Fix crashes and enhance performance

  • Moderate user-submitted information

  • Improve user experience

We do not use data for:

  • Advertising profiling

  • Cross-app tracking

  • Selling data

  • Marketing outside the App

5. DATA STORAGE AND SECURITY

We use industry-standard security practices to protect all data.

  • All server communication is encrypted (HTTPS/TLS).

  • No personal identifiers are stored.

  • Data access is restricted to authorized personnel for moderation and maintenance.

6. CHILDREN’S PRIVACY

Global Food Facts is suitable for general audiences, but not directed toward children.

We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
If a parent or guardian contacts us to request removal of submitted content, we will comply promptly.

7. PERMISSIONS USED

The App may request:

Camera (Optional)

Purpose: Barcode scanning only
Data kept: NONE

Internet (Required)

Purpose:

  • Retrieve product information

  • Send optional user submissions

  • Load policy documents
    Data kept: Minimal (non-personal)

We do not request:

  • Location

  • Contacts

  • Storage access

  • Microphone

  • Phone

  • SMS

This helps ensure fast and safe Google Play approval.

8. THIRD-PARTY SERVICES

We do not integrate any ad networks.
If analytics is enabled, the App may use:

Google Play’s Official Crash Reporting / Analytics (No personal data)

Collects anonymized technical performance data only.

We do not use:

  • Facebook services

  • Third-party advertising SDKs

  • Tracking SDKs

  • Cross-app identifiers

9. INTERNATIONAL DATA PROCESSING

Our servers may be located in multiple regions.
Regardless of location, the same privacy protections apply.

10. YOUR RIGHTS

You have the right to:

  • Disable analytics anytime

  • Request deletion of community submissions

  • Request clarification about data handling

  • Opt out of camera usage

Email us for any requests.

11. DATA RETENTION

  • Local preferences remain on your device until you delete the App

  • Optional community submissions remain until you request deletion

  • Server-side logs (non-identifying) are automatically erased periodically

We keep no permanent personal profiles.

12. COOKIES & TRACKING

We do not use:

  • Cookies

  • Third-party tracking

  • Fingerprinting technologies

  • Advertising IDs

13. LINKS TO EXTERNAL SOURCES

Food details may include links to:

  • Government nutrition databases

  • Manufacturer websites

  • Scientific references

We are not responsible for external content or privacy practices.

14. POLICY UPDATES

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in:

  • Features

  • Regulations

  • Data practices

If updated, a notice will appear in the App.
Continued use after updates constitutes acceptance.
